An intimate, deceptively simple garden which is both superbly planted and impeccably maintained. The masterly planting, with a careful but also relaxed and instinctive approach to colour and wonderful use of foliage, divides the small plot into smaller sections of distinct character. A garden of cottage favourites - aquilegias, geraniums, heucheras and tiarellas - invites quiet sitting, while the Great Wall of China displays alpines and other small plants deserving of close study in an admirably natural manner. A stroll leads through shady walks and open lawns, with luscious planting on all sides, and even wilder areas further from the cottage are carefully presented. Established in 1970, the internationally renowned garden attracts regular visitors who return for different seasons, and for plants from the nursery, where some of the most appealing and distinctive plants from the garden are for sale. In 2005 an arboretum of two acres was planted with 'ride' and grass labyrinth.
