Gwennap Pit was formed by the falling in of the old mine workings. By the 1760s the rock face had weathered with time and had become covered with vegetation.
John Wesley first came here in 1762 and described it as a round green hollow and later as his amphitheatre. He visited it 18 times between 1762 abd 1789, always on a Sunday. In 1776 on seeing the Pit filled with people who had come to hear him he said "I think this is the most magnificent spectacle which is to be seen on this side of heaven." On his last visit John Wesley was 86 years old. In 1806 a group of local mine captains remodelled it as a permanent memorial to John Wesley. The wall they built and the twelve regular rows of seats still remain today.
