Calshot Castle formed part of the chain of coastal forts built by Henry VIII in 1539. Its strategic importance, alongside the deep-water channel between Southampton and Portsmouth led to it being manned throughout the centuries. In the 20thC it is best remembered as a flying boat and marine craft RAF base and is forever associated with the Schneider Trophy air races. In World War II, Calshot played a key support role, especially in connection with air/sea rescue.
