Its design is clearly influenced by the 13th century Sainte Chapelle in Paris, built for the French monarchy. St Mary’s was built in 1866 by Henry Conybeare for his brother, then Rector, who complained that the previous church was cold and damp. The interior is a dazzling kaleidoscope of colour from the elegant arched windows The roof is elaborately painted. The floor of the sanctuary has tiles laid out in the form of a labyrinth. The church is best visited on a sunny day for the full effect of light through the windows.
