Flanked on either side by alms houses, this remarkable little chapel forms the central part of a hospital endowed by Richard Fountaine; a local man who made his fortune as a timber merchant in London during the rebuilding of the city after the Great Fire. Built in 1735, to designs ascribed to Sir John Vanbrugh, this tiny chapel, with its classical Georgian interior and wonderful view of Thorpe Fell from its large clear glass Venetian style window, is well worth discovering.
