Off the beaten track and fortunately missed by the destructions of 1069, Ellerburn church is truly an undiscovered gem. A minster church of the Celtic mission from Whitby, St Hilda's would originally have been a wooden building with stone churchyard crosses. Dating from c.1150, the present stone church reveals the remains of these 8th and 9th century crosses built into its walls, along with many interesting and symbolic carvings.
