With superb views of the village, the present church dates mainly from the early 14th century when an earlier church was extended, possibly under the patronage of Lady Beatrice Hastings whose effigy lies in the sanctuary. Another patron, Sir Richard Cholmley, 'The Black Knight of the North' (d.1583), is buried in the chancel. Damaged when Parliamentary troops were billetted in the church during the Civil War, it is still possible to see sword and pistol marks on the pillars.
