A treasure house at the heart of this historic market town, St John the Baptist dates from 1114 when King Henry I gave the church to the Augustinian Priory at Nostell. Evidence of the early church can be seen in the string course and in the blocked up windows in the chancel, which is flanked on either side by 13th century chapels. With magnificent memorials in the Slingsby family chapel, glass by Morris and Co. and many other interesting features St John's is not to be missed.
