A simple church built by volunteer labour from the local lead mines, St Mary's sits at the top of the longest hill in Yorkshire and at 1550 feet above sea level is the highest church. The brilliant west windows contain mediaeval glass which may have been looted from Fountains Abbey. A short distance from the church, the cemetery is a haven for flora and is home to three types of rare orchid. An unusual lych-gate by Robert Thompson of Kilburn marks the entrance to this windswept plot.
Service times: 1st Sun 1830 Evensong; 3rd Sun 0900 Communion.
