Tucked away in this quiet residential area, St Mary's is probably the oldest church in the city, with parts of its tower dating back to the 11th century. With Roman saxa quadrata and tile at its base, salvaged from a dwelling that once occupied the site, 11th century 'herringbone' masonry signalling a second building phase and 15th century battlements crowning the structure, St Mary's is a remarkable example of the organic development of the English parish church.
