Nestling in a valley near Malton is Wharram Percy, the extraordinary site of one of the country's most famous deserted mediaeval villages. Still standing are the remains of the mediaeval church and farm cottages, and the foundations of over 30 mediaeval peasant houses can be clearly seen. As the only parish church in the area, St Martin's continued to be used after the village itself was deserted, with local people making the trek through the beautiful valley to attend services.
