Built in 1146 by the monks of Byland Abbey, St Mary's Church at Scawton is a remarkably unspoiled Norman building in spite of having undergone two restorations; the first of which, by Hodgson Fowler in 1892, was much admired by Pevsner. The attractive interior contains the original mediaeval stone altar and a mysterious pillared sink whose original use is unknown.
