Number 34 is a Grade II listed town house, part Georgian, part Elizabethan. Its current owners have created a very comfortable period atmosphere with personal touches.
The property is part of an ancient terrace of townhouses and shops which are of considerable historic significance in the town of Barnard Castle. The letting rooms are unusually spacious and full of period furniture and features e.g. beams, old fireplaces, window seats and mullioned windows. The twin room with private bathroom was converted from the Georgian drawing room and with an area of 39 square metres is the larger one of the guest rooms. The recently refurbished double room has a 4-poster bed, beamed ceilings and is of a similar size inclusive of a new en suite bathroom with roll top bath. There is also a quiet, cosy double room looking to the rear of the house. Guests who knew the house under the previous owners have all commented very positively on the change of accommodation.
Guests may use the large lounge/library as well as the garden which has been attractively terraced and which offer fascinating views across the old roofs of Barnard Castle down to the River Tees.
Breakfast is served either in the lounge or in the ancient dining room. However, the dining room seems to be frequently visited by George, the resident ghost, although so far all encounters have been friendly.
Dinner is available in a large number of pubs and restaurants, all in walking distance, including Blagraves next door which is the oldest occupied building in town and counts Oliver Cromwell among its guests.
