Lancaster Grand Theatre first opened in 1782 and was known simply as "The Theatre, Lancaster". In 1884 the building was altered and renamed 'The Athenaeum' and it was under this name that the Theatre was badly damaged by fire in 1908. Rebuilt in the same year, it re-opened under its present name. Apart from this rebuilding period, the Theatre has been in continuous use for 200 years.
Guided tours of the interior offer the chance of sighting the reputed ghost of actress Sarah Siddons.
