A church has stood on this site for over 900 years, the first was reduced to rubble during the Norman Conquest and rebuilt by French monks, who established a Benedictine priory here in 1098. The priory lost its lands and buildings during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536 but was allowed to continue as a parish church and is now the only monastic foundation in York to survive as a place of worship. For many years the script for York's famous mediaeval cycle of Mystery Plays was kept here and the plays began each year outside the gateway to the priory.
Service times: Sun 1100 Sung Eucharist.
