The shrine, on land now owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council was built in memory of Mr Willis Fleming's second son Richard who was killed in action in 1916 and as a memorialto all local men serving in the forces.
THe Stoneham war shrine in Avenue Park,North Stoneham is one of a pair built in 1917 by landowner John Willis Fleming of Stoneham Park House. The other is at Havenstreet on the Isle of Wight. The Willis Fleming family owned North Stoneham Park from 1599 and thestate was finally sold and broken up in1954. A plan for restoration of the shrine by the Council and the Fleming family is dependant on recent application to the Lottery Commission.
