The church has Saxon carvings and medieval glass, as well as being the burial place of political philosopher Thomas Hobbes.

St John the Baptist Church is Saxon in foundation and a Grade I listed building. The yew tree in front of the Church is variously aged between 2,000 and 4,000 years old! Every generation has added its distinct work to the building. There are Saxon arches, the tower and north transept are Norman, the south transept, once early English, was rebuilt by Smythson (Bess of Hardwick's architect) in 1597.
The Cavendish Chapel, named for its links with the Earls and Dukes of Devonshire, houses the 1628 memorial to the Countess of Devonshire and is also the resting place of the great philosopher and secretary to successive 17th Century Earls and Dukes of Devonshire, Thomas Hobbes.
On Saturday openingss there is usually a cup of tea and light refreshments available. There is a small church car park or visitors can park on the roadside. There is a path for wheelchairs to bypass the Victorian steps and there is a disabled toilet. A mobile ramp allows wheelchiar access down the final 2 steps into the nave.
