The Midland Railway was formed on the 10 May 1844 by the amalgamation of three independent companies which converged on Derby. these companies comprised the North Midland Railway, the Midland Counties Railway and the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway. The Midland was at the time of formation the largest independent company under single management.

In 1836 proposals for a joint railway were fully discussed when the present site of Derby Station was agreed upon , the station was opened to traffic on 4 June 1839 and completed in 1840. By 1846 Derby Station and related areas occupied over 232 acres. the station was further enlarged in 1867 and 1881. Deterioration over the years meant that a new station was built between 1985 and 1987.
