Grown in Europe as a dye source since the Stone Age, production in England declined because of imported indigo from South East Asia and synthetic indigo which was cheaper to create than the natural blue. Now this ancient craft is seeing a revival in the heart of Boudicca's Iceni countryside.
The Woad Centre houses a presentation on present day wood production together with an explanation of the traditional process.
The on-site shop offers a rare opportunity to purchase unique items from the beautiful blue textile range. Quality goods are made in small quantities and dyed with the eco-friendly, plant derived pigment.
