The current landscape is a result of over 320 million years of geological movement, ice ages and the erosive effects of the weather. Victorian visitors however, believed the stunning rock formations were the work of Druids who fashioned the rock into the mysterious shapes, hence such names as the Druid's Idol, Writing Desk and Coffin. Today, with a little imagination you may be able to spot the Baboon, Dancing Bear and Eagle.
Visitors have come to Brimham Rocks for generations. In the 1800s its popularity increased dramatically due to the growth of Harrogate as a fashionable spa resort, the romance of wild areas and the arrival of trains and improved roads. Today, cared for by the National Trust, Brimham Rocks is enjoyed as a place for exploring, walking and climbing - for those with skills and equipment.
