Burn View is a comfortable Edwardian family house that has been tastefully renovated to retain many original features. The house overlooks the beautiful, rural Derwent Valley and Gibside Estate National Trust property. Visitors can enjoy the sight of magnificent Red Kites soaring over our roof and the birds regularly provide a wonderful display of low flight outside our dining room window. Situated on a quiet lane but just 2 minutes walk from the centre of the small town of Rowlands Gill, Burn View is ideally sited for visitors to enjoy our beautiful countryside or enjoy Rowlands Gill’s eating places (Thai, Italian, award-winning fish and chip takeaway, high quality sandwich shop or local tearoom). Rowlands Gill also offers a supermarket, a variety of small shops, off-licence, Post Office, banks, churches, library, park with gardens, tennis courts, bowling green, mini golf, children’s playground, riverside walk and large playing field, library, hairdressers and barbers, small pet hotel, garden centre. The Derwent Walk is just a stone’s throw away from our front door and at this stage forms part of the C2C, Coast to Coast cycle ride. (We are conveniently situated for cyclist who wish to make a stop before the final section to the east coast! We offer secure, indoor cycle storage. We greet our guests with a cup of tea or coffee and homemade fruit loaf. We aim to offer a high quality, relaxing experience and after unpacking their bags guests can enjoy a relaxing spa bath or settle down in our Derwent Room to enjoy the early evening sunset and the views over gardens to Barmoor Fell in the distance or watch a favourite TV programme before setting out to enjoy the night-life and entertainment of Newcastle, Durham or the Metro-Centre. The Derwent Room offers a comfortable double bed, TV with video/DVD player, wireless internet access, radio alarm clock, CD player and a hospitality tray with a wide range of beverages and snacks, fluffy towels and luxury toiletries. The bedroom has controllable heating and hot water bottles for extra cosiness on winter evenings or fans to keep you cool on hot summer nights. In the morning, you will awake to the aroma of a Burn View breakfast and home-made bread. Breakfast is a leisurely affair, freshly made from locally-sourced products. Afterwards you can enjoy reading your paper in our garden conservatory or our family lounge before setting off to explore the delights of the North-East.
From Burn View you can visit the stunning landscape of Hadrian’s Wall Heritage Site, the Northumbrian coastline with its amazing castles at Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick and Lindisfarne or the gentle valleys of Weardale. Beamish Open Air Museum is on our doorstep and the Centre for Life, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Arts and the Sage Music Centre are all easy to get to by car or public transport. If you enjoy sport Durham County Cricket Ground, Gateshead International Stadium and Telewest Arena are venues for national and international events. Burn View is also ideally situated for shopping in one of the largest shopping malls in Europe, the MetroCentre or enjoying the delights of Newcastle’s historic Sunday morning Quayside Market. The delightful University town of Durham with its majestic Cathedral and famous riverside walks is a short drive away. Newcastle is well-known for its fantastic nightlife and with our extensive local knowledge we can offer advice on where to go to suit your pocket and your style.
There are two golf courses less than ten minutes drive away and the Derwent River and a variety of local reservoirs offer excellent fishing. Horse riding is also available at several local stables. You can leave our front door and follow many beautiful, well-marked local walks offering panoramic views, historic ruins and (if you’re quiet) an abundance of wildlife. The Thornley Woodland Centre offers badger and bat watches and family events throughout the year. The local history of the immediate vicinity is fascinating and we will happily share stories of long ago.
