Swanage has a gently sloping white sand beach which is sheltered and generally calm. The award winning beach is well served by local businesses providing refreshments and services.
The beach is one of the main attractions of the town with thousands flocking to Swanage every summer to relax on the sand. The waters are clean, and the beach has one many European Blue Flag Awards, as well as the Encams Quality Coast Award. Swanage beach has a well earned reputation for being a good place to soak up the sun and play in the sand and sea. Deck chairs are available for rent, as are Pedloes Kayaks and sun beds. Swanage beach runs the length of the town and is backed by a promenade lined with amusements and attractions. Near to the Lifeboat House is the Wellington Clock Tower which once stood on London Bridge. On a clear day it is possible to see all the way over to the Isle of Wight.
Swanage beach is home to many water sports. The town has a long association with scuba diving, and the first shop to sell scuba diving equipment in the UK is still open on Swanage Pier. Diving training programmes and excursions run regularly from Swanage, the shallow bay and clear waters offer excellent training grounds for this sport. Other water sports include sailing, water-skiing and wind surfing.
Swanage beach is part of the South West Coast Path. It is not at all uncommon for people to set out from the chain ferry that links Studland Bay to Poole and walk over the cliffs and Old Harry Rocks to Swanage beach. From here buses run back towards Poole.
