In 1989 the space was converted into the Terrace Gallery which is used by Harewood as a venue for exhibiting contemporary art. Entry to the gallery is included with all tickets.

This room was designed in the 18th century as a 'Sub-Hall' - a private entrance and exit for the family to leave the House and enter the Grounds.
An inventory of 1795 lists a barometer, chairs, small tables, guns, 14 flowers stands and several bird cages as well as a 'large cast iron stove' amongst the furniture in the Sub-Hall.
Originally this room connected directly to the main staircase of the House. Then in the mid 19th century the stairs were stopped short at ground level to give more space on the Basement Floor. External steps were added to the south facade and the family's main entrance to the Terrace, in summertime, became French windows leading off the State Floor. In winter and for 'muddy boots' activities, the Sub-Hall was the preferred route.
When the House was built there was a large Coffee Room adjoining the Sub-Hall, which must have been very welcome on cold days.
