Marsden Moor Estate

Marsden Moor is 6000 acres of open moor with a wealth of industrial arachaeological remains. Public footpaths and Pennine Way give easy access to many peaks, crags, reservoirs and valleys. Guided walks and events take place throughout the year.

Standing high on the open moor, with the mist swirling round and the watery sun just breaking through, the thought of man's contact with an area over thousands of years old began flooding to mind - the Mesolithic hunters round the camp fire, the clink of the Roman centurion's armour on the old Chester to York road, the rattle of the pack horse harness as men trudged through peat and over streams, the roar of the mills in the valley and the clatter of worker's clogs.

A landscape like Marsden Moor needs to be looked after. The gradual re-vegetation of previously exposed areas of bare peat is a sign that the vast erosion problems of old are being tackled, providing better wildlife habitats and grazing.
