A huge ruined country mansion built around 1439. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1569, 1584 and 1585 and whilst here the plot to free Mary and overthrow Elizabeth I was hatched. The building has been unoccupied since the 1770's. Enjoy the Gothic Hall, climb the tower for magnificent views and bring a torch to find the angels and 'Green Men' in the superb vaulted undercroft.
