The Houses of Parliament are one of London’s most famous attractions and the seat of government in England. Laws are proposed, debated and made here and Big Ben, the famous clock tower, chimes out the time over central London.
The building you see today, on the north bank of the River Thames, opposite the London Eye, was designed by architects Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin. It was finished in 1870, though there’s been a seat of government here since the 11th century. Westminster Hall survives from this period and has the largest hammer-beam roof in Northern Europe.
During summer opening, when MPs work away from Westminster, you can buy tickets to tour Parliament from the ticket office located next to the Jewel Tower. Tours last around 75 minutes and run from Monday to Saturday inclusive.
Tours of Parliament include the key areas, such as the Commons and Lords debating chambers and the Queen’s Robing Room where the Queen is helped into her ceremonial dress on the day of the state opening of parliament.
