English Heritage.

Together with the larger and later more dominant Pendennis Castle, St Mawes Castle was built near the waterline by Henry VIII to guard the entrance to the safe anchorage in the Carrick Roads. Three huge circular bastions arranged in a cloverleaf pattern, with multiple gun ports were formidable defences indeed! Today, the castle stands intact and although re-fortified throughout its history, it is a Tudor time capsule wanting to be explored. Set in landscaped grounds, which provide some fine views of the surrounding coastline, it is an ideal place for a picnic.

Services: Parking, audio tour, shop. Special events, toilets. Group discount.

Site may close at 4pm on Sunday & Friday for hospitality functions from Easter to end September.
