Built on a grand scale in the 12th century by the Bishop of Salisbury, Sherborne was coveted by churchmen and noblemen alike. Not surprisingly it has a long and chequered history and became a powerful Royalist base during the Civil War. Visitors today can delight in the great gatehouse, stroll in the castle grounds and enjoy a picnic where Sir Walter Raleigh once entertained when the castle acted as his country home. The English Heritage shop stocks gifts and souvenirs and refreshments are available.
