The grounds and ruins of a great Benedictine abbey, founded by William the Conqueror to commemorate the Battle of Hastings, 1066. The church's high altar is on the spot where King Harold was killed. The fine abbey gatehouse dates from the 14thC and contains an exhibition. Diagrams around the site give an understanding of the battle. There is a good view of the battlefield from the terrace. New visitor centre with CGI film and interactive exhibition.
