Castle probably built during the reign of Edward VI for coast defence. Additional fortifications were built during the Civil War.
So-called because of its occupation by royalist forces in 1651, this small artillery fort was probably built a hundred years earlier during the reign of the boy king Edward VI (1547-1553). The fort was intended to protect New Grimsby Harbour, but proved to be badly sited when attacked.
